Objective Summary part 2

In part two of Mark Bowden's "Black Hawk Down", He goes through the conflict as a second black hawk is shot down. The rangers quickly secure the wreckage and evacuate the crew. The rest of the Rangers continue to try to get to the original helicopter that was shot down. He reviews how most of the somali soldiers had started out at a very young age, as child soldiers, and how often their allegiances change as time goes on stating "Ali had been fighting in these streets already a decade, since he was fourteen years old and had  been drummed into Siad Barre's army"(216). Bowden consistently brings up the hatred that the somalis have for the United States and how that fuels them to fight them off. He also describes how the wage war, they stay in crowds of civilians and run from hiding place to hiding place, far enough away to not be a huge target.

Essential question

Essential question: Should gun restrictions be tightened?

Claim: Gun restrictions should not be tightened.
Reason: Gun control should not be tightened because many people use firearms as a means of self defense.
It is important for people to have firearms for self defense because they are the most effective means of disabling a living thing. Most criminals are not going to attack a place if they know they will be shot at if they try and rob it. Guns can save you from violent crimes and allow you to protect your various belongings.

Objective summary

In the first part of Black Hawk Down,Mark Bowden spends a little time talking about the daily lives of the soldiers on the base, and shifts into the conflict that would later be known as black hawk down.
Black Hawk Down Movie cover
He describes both sides of the conflict, specifically one soldier from every squad and a few Somalis who were involved in the fighting (including a ten year old boy determined to kill an army Ranger). The Rangers drop into the combat zone to abduct the two lieutenants of a Somali war lord. The Rangers realize the Somalis have set a trap for them and the mission quickly falls apart. The different squads are cut off from one another and begin setting up ways to defend themselves when a Black Hawk Helicopter is shot down by a Somali RPG. All the squads begin moving toward the crash site to look for survivors.

Evaluate how useful Jon Stone will be in the investigation.

Jon Stone will be useful, but not extremely dedicated to the investigation. He enjoys being a soldier so much so that after he retired from Delta, he became a mercenary for the United States government. He expresses his want for money, as well as his dislike for Elvis Cole. "Why you still rolling with him? Cole don't pay...."(Crais 120). Cole doesn't charge much for his services, and as a result Stone does not like working with him. Stone has a seemingly illogical obsession with upgrading his house. Every penny he earns goes into his house, even though after being there for only eighteen hours he already wanted to leave.

Discussion Question response #1

Question: evaluate Nita's belief that Krista ran away to get married

Nita's belief that Krista ran off to marry Jack is not logical. Krista and her boyfriend, jack, went missing and called with a random demand, Nita assumed that it was Jack scamming her into enough money to go to Vegas and get married. Krista is a ridiculously responsible person, knowing this, Elvis thinks that based off of the call, and Krista's personality, that they really were abducted. "This was a ransom demand it sounds like shes been abducted.' Nita Morales waved me off again.
'He put her up to this so they could get married" (Crais 21). Nita is not thinking logically, she is in denial that her daughter could actually be in trouble. In the ransom call Krista fakes a heavy mexican accent, Elvis knows she wouldnt go to that much of an extreme just for $500. Nita is not thinking logically, she just wants to believe that Jack is behind everything bad.

Malcome Gladwell's research seems legitimate enough to be convincing, he tends to research more about people than he does ideas, for example; the spaghetti sauce lecture. It was all about the man who changed spaghetti sauce. The Norton bomb sight lecture was all about the inventor, David and Goliath, he just broke down scripture to make a profile for each person involved. A simple synthesis of his work is that things might seem to be one way, and everyone could believe it, but if you look at it closer, you will realize that humans will never be just one way, there's thousands of ways each individual thinks an
